I’ve begun to think more and more about (the basics of) complexity theory within our context of IT development & delivery. Why? Well, it’s complex…* As always, this is a random stream of my current thoughts. Hope you enjoy and let me know what you think!
First contact: Stacey’s model and incident processes
For a few years now, I’ve given various trainings to several groups of people, topics amongst which are DevOps (or effective software engineering) basics, Cloud architecture, and bits and pieces of Scrum here and there. Something that popped up there for me first was something called the ‘Stacey Matrix’, named after its creator Ralph D. Stacey**, seen below.
Here, Stacey has created 4 different ‘domains’ of work as a simplification of reality, pending on how much a group is in agreement about the work to do, and how certain they are about how to best tackle it. Or, as above, can we be sure about our requirements, and what exact technological solution we need to use to meet those?
Initially, I understood and used the definition of complex work/systems to be an explanation of why we cannot simply work to ‘avoid’ incidents, but rather accept that incidents will happen. When they
