Ruth Dennis was born in Newark, New Jersey, studying dancing as a child and making her professional debut at the age of sixteen. It was at this early stage of her career that she was filmed by Edison, billed in the December 1894 Kinetograph Company Bulletin as the 'Champion High Kicker of the World'. Less known is the fact that around the same she was also filmed for Charles Chinnock's imitation Kinetoscope. She continued to make a haphazard living as a dancer in vaudeville and in musical comedies until 1905 when she choreographed and produced her first ballet, Radha. Although, according to Agnes de Mille, she 'dressed up as an Egyptian cigarette ad ... and gave Oriental mysticism a new lease of life by undulating in a roof garden restaurant', she was intensely interested in Eastern culture and dance forms. With her husband Ted Shawn she founded the Denishawn School of Dancing in 1915, developing such leading modern dancers as Martha Graham and Charles Weidman. Biography
Ruth St. Denis was born on January 20, 1879. Her parents were Ruth Emma (née Hull) Denis (a physician by training), and Thomas Laban Denis, a machinist and inventor; they were not married. She was raised on the small Pin Oaks Farm in New Jersey, where she studied Christian Science. She used to invent melodramas, specialising in fainting and collapsing to the floor in front of an audience of friends. As a child, she learned exercises based on François Delsarte's Society Gymnastics and Voice Culture. This was the beginning of St. Denis's dance training, and was instrumental in developing her technique later in life. In 1891 she raised the money to travel briefly to New York, auditioning in the Marwig studio; she was pronounced to have talent, and her mother set about getting her into theatre. In 1892, she witnessed the Delsarte advocate Genevieve Stebbins performing a matinee, The Dance of Day; she described the experience as "the real birth of my art life"
