Rauh The Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg is one of about 80 institutes of the Max Planck Society. Its establishment in 1967 was based on the realization that a supraregional institute equipped with powerful telescopes would be needed in order to be internationally competitive in astronomical research. Together with the Center for Astronomy at the University (ZAH) and the Department of Astro- and Particle Physics at the MPI for Nuclear Physics, it constitutes a worldwide renowned center of astronomical research in Heidelberg.

The Institute, completed in 1975, is dealing with the preparation and analysis of astronomical observations and the development of new measuring methods. From 1973 to 1984, it pursued together with Spanish authorities the establishment of the German-Spanish Astronomical Center (DSAZ) on the Calar Alto Mountain near Almeria (Andalusia).
