Hi everyone! We wanted to spread the word about a free lecture for dancers by Dr. George Sawa entitled “Arabic Music, Ornamentation, Aesthetics and the Many Forms of Dance Music” at the University of Alberta.
Dr. George’s credits are extensive: he obtained his PhD in Medieval Historic Arabic Musicology from the University of Toronto and is a recipient of the Life-Time Achievement Award from the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. His recording, The Art of the Early Egyptian Qanum, was nominated for a Juno award. Finally, he has authored one of the best and most useful musical tools for the dancer – – Egyptian Music Appreciation & Practise for Bellydancers, a comprehensive book plus musical compilation of the field. He continues his life’s work in Toronto as author, lecturer, translator, storyteller, musician (qanum, nay, zagat), arranger, master teacher and comedian.
