    Walking the Gendered Tightrope: Theresa May and Nancy Pelosi as Legislative Leaders

    This chapter discusses how Nancy Pelosi successfully engaged with some of the greatest challenges of her leadership career. Even though Pelosi was uncontested in her historic election as Speaker in , she has faced direct or proxy challenges to her leadership since (keeping in mind that she was first elected to the leadership in ). Thus, despite the fact that she has been the Democratic leader for nearly two decades, these repeated challenges to Pelosi’s leadership indicate that others in her caucus see her as either vulnerable or a liability—or both.
