Elda Furry (May 2, February 1, ), known professionally as Hedda Hopper, was an American gossip columnist and actress. At the height of her influence in the s, more than 35 million people read her columns. A strong supporter of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) hearings, Hopper named suspected Communists and was a major proponent of the Hollywood blacklist. Hopper continued to write her gossip column until her death in Her work appeared in many magazines and later on radio. She had an extended feud with Louella Parsons, an arch-rival and fellow gossip columnist.
Early life
[edit]Hopper was born Elda Furry in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Margaret (née Miller; –) and David Furry, a butcher, both members of the German Baptist Brethren. Her family was of Pennsylvania Dutch (German) descent.[1] The family moved to Altoona when Elda was three.

[edit]She eventually ran away to New York City and began her career in the chorus on the Broadway stage. Hopper was not successful in this venture. Florenz Ziegfeld called the aspiring starlet a "clumsy cow" and brushed off her pleas for a slot in his lavish Follies. After a few years, she joined

Elda Furry was born in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on June 2, Her parents, strict Quakers, were David E. and Margaret Furry. On May 8, , she married De Wolf Hopper, whom she later divorced. They had a son, William. In , Elda changed her name to Hedda Hopper after consulting a numerologist for advice on selecting a stage name.
After running away from home at the age of 18, Hedda studied music and voice Pittsburgh's Carter Conservatory of Music. Before turning to writing, Hedda was a stage and silent film actress, appearing in numerous films from until her death in In addition to her film career, Hedda Hopper was a gossip columnist from to Her work appeared in the Chicago Tribune. As a gossip columnist, she used her experience and connections in film to focus on Hollywood stars. She wrote about everything: from people's clothing to their relationships. Hopper was not one to check her sources and information before writing her column. Oftentimes, she would print secondhand gossip in efforts to out-do her archrival Louella Parsons. Hedda also wrote two autobiographies, From Under My Hat () and The Whole Truth and Nothing But (), in which she compiled her experiences as a gossip columnist.
